Anyone who'd like to study Churchillian elocution could do much worse than to begin with this finely written and highly educational book, but so could any lover of animals or the English language.I've rarely read a piece of non-fiction so full of fun information and educational tidbits, or so extraordinarily well-crafted.One must suppose that anything to do with Churchill would naturally benefit from his divine gift for writing and speaking, but Piers Brendon is quite adept himself, and the topic is just plain fascinating, not only how and why Churchill loved animals, but how he wrote and spoke of them, and embroidered them into his every waking moment for his entire life.I loved every single word, sentence, paragraph, page and chapter in this amusing volume and highly recommend it to anyone who admires Churchill, his style, his humor, his knowledge of classics and history --- or anyone who simply likes the furry, winged, webbed, scaled, finned, multi-legged and other creatures who share our planet.Colorful paradoxes, metaphors, witticisms and more await every mammalian reader's appetite, and maybe the appetites of those who usually consume ambrosia, too.I can't remember the last time I so thoroughly enjoyed a book as this. Just plain wonderful.Ten stars. Churchill’s Menagerie was a major disappointment. Why then have I given it three stars?This apparent disconnect is best explained by providing more detail about the layout of the book. There are three main sections: the introduction and detailed timeline of Churchill’s life; the “Bestiary” that extends over more than 250 pages; and a detailed Notes section.The Bestiary is arranged alphabetically by the name of the various animals that Churchill had as pets, that he referenced in his speeches and writings, or that he and his family and friends hunted. These range from the albatross to peacocks and pigs to poodles and worms, ending up with a short piece on Churchill’s fondness for zoos.The eels essay references times when Churchill seemed to appear as one who not be pinned down by the Foreign Office, even wriggling out of Cabinet control.In the entry on vultures, we learn that Churchill “appears as a green Caterpillar” in a satire of the time, spouting poetry about vultures.The problem in all of this is that, by arranging the individual chapters by alphabetic animal name, there is no continuity and a confusing juxtaposition of stories and anecdotes from first one time period and then another. The aforementioned eels entry discusses eel references from his childhood, then to 1937 rebuke from Bernard Shaw and on to some of his international dealings in the early 50s. This is immediately followed by the entry on elephants that begins with a cute little story about a three-year old Winston asking for “an ephelant” and then more elephant anecdotes from 1896, 1917, 1921,1933, 1940, and probably more. The sheer volume of these little stories and their range from personal to globally critical is sometimes head spinning.For those of us who are not well acquainted with Winston Churchill and are looking to learn more, Churchill’s Menagerie earns, at best, one star. The material here is too disjointed to make any coherent understanding of his life impossible.On the other hand, it is possible that those who are familiar with Churchill and cannot get enough of the minutiae of his life may well find this a source of trivia to have at the ready in future discussions about the man. Perhaps a few zoologists may even find this a good resource placing a favorite animal into the life story of a famous man like Churchill. Even for thee two groups of possibly interested readers, be aware that the writing is generally very detailed and dry.For the rest of us, however, pass on this book and look for a somewhat more conventional biography.
