After World War II, Churchill saved her from prosecution for being an alleged Nazi spy.From her viewpoint, she collaborated with Nazis for personal goals: to rescue her nephew from a prisoner of war camp, oversee her investments in Rue Cambon buildings by living nearby at Hotel Ritz, and have part of her financial stake restored in Chanel No. 5. In war-torn Europe, she kept her family and property intact.Wendy Reves became a New York model who dated Cary Grant, Errol Flynn and Howard Hughes. Then she lived with Churchill’s publisher Emery Reves who bought La Pausa in 1953 and had Churchill as a house guest for a third of each year 1956-58. As a survivor of the London blitz in WWII and as an avid admirer of Churchill, having read all of his great works as well as those who have written about the great man, I found Nancy Smith’s tome a fascinatingly unique insight into this period of his life. Churchill certainly loved the good things in life and Wendy Reeves was well able to pamper him much to the chagrin of Clementine who could never herself accept a corresponding invitation to stay at La Pausa the magnificent villa overlooking my own favorite town on the Riviera, Menton and just 5 minutes drive from Monte Carlo. Nancy’s long time friendship with the late Wendy Reeves has been able to draw on the immense personal knowledge of Wendy’s relationship with Churchill and provides incisive insight into the breaking up of this friendship by the coarse Aristotle Onassis with the enthusiastic support of Clementine Churchill. She much preferred the Onassis yacht and to have her husband eating Aristotle’s rare Iranian caviar without , “that American woman” hovering over him. I can assure you by getting this book you cannot not fail to be intrigued and entertained by Nancy Smith’s depiction of Churchill on the French Riviera.
